I am a former drug worker having previously worked with homeless injecting drugs users and people living with HIV, those in abstinence-based recovery and people exiting the criminal justice system. Having been homeless myself while injecting drugs like crack cocaine and heroin I understand some of the challenges of access to services and the criminalisation of drug users. As an activist I have set up and run the first UK’s safe injecting facility (SIF) also know as drug consumption rooms (DCR) in Glasgow which has the biggest outbreak of HIV in the UK in 30 years condensed amongst PWID. Although the site is not sanctioned, we are challenging the legal frameworks and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. As well as providing life saving interventions, we provide a range of harm reduction advice and we are supported both national and internationally by harm reduction organisations, drug policy experts, academics and politicians.
